    Blurs. Jules Cozine.

Boundaries are healthy.  That’s what we’re told.  But when do we cross the line over into compartmentalization?  As artists and in turn, as people, every experience we have informs another.  Lines and lives blur and maybe we worry that we are losing control, no longer able to see where one thing ends and another begins.

The work of St. Petersburg artist Jules Cozine finds the beauty in the blurriness, shapes shift and colors bleed as our pupils try to focus in on the details, but finding none, we are forced to see the whole.  Just as when we concentrate our energies on one aspect of life for too long, the others fall apart.  We are meant to take in the whole.  To blur the lines, to collide our worlds.

    Evolutions. Megan Cosby.

One of the joys of having worked in the fine art industry for a good long while has been the pleasure of watching the evolution of so many artists.  I absolutely love looking back on an artist’s older work and seeing glimpses of what was to come!  The journey of Nashville based artist Megan Cosby has been one of my favorites to watch and in her new work, I see her artistry growing and glowing.

Megan and I are from the same hometown, graduated from the same college, and we’ve both decided to find our way in new places.  Starting over in a new place can be stressful and intimidating ( I should know, we do it all the time! ), but a change of scene can offer an adjustment in perspective that happens to be just what we needed.  And it seems as if the neon glow of music city is shining through in Megan’s abstract paintings.  Like a beautifully composed song, there is a balance of light and dark, depth and nuanced delicacy that shows that she isn’t just a painter but an interpreter of moments.

    Digitizations. Max Morris.

When Mr. F and I first arrived here in the Bay Area, we were without WiFi at home for a few days.  We never realize how very reliant we are on technology until we are forced to be without it, am I right?!  But certain artists have learned to use these addictive technologies to their advantage.  Artist Max Morris creates these amazing digitized paintings that almost seem to still be wet with pigment.

Technology is indeed a powerful tool, but we don’t have to be slaves to it.  It helps me feel connected to my loved ones on the other side of the country, to feel an intimacy almost as good as being there, to share in our every day lives together.  Through the same kind of sharing, even with strangers, bonds can be created and relationships formed that are as real as if we’d met in person.  And we can use technology to find new ways of seeing– a photograph can be zoomed in on, enhanced, so that a detail we may have missed catches our eye.  We see things not just as there are, but perhaps as they could be.

  • Flourishes. Kayleigh Fichten.

    Flourishes. Kayleigh Fichten.

We each have a unique way of interacting with the world around us.  Whether through the way we approach each day, our manner of address or dress, or how we set a table, we all have our own brand of ourselves.  We paint with broad strokes or fine detail.  We are our flourishes.

These quirks might seem insignificant, but every one of these tiny traits make us unique.  So, too are the brushstrokes of each artist.  These broad, sweeping strokes by Minneapolis artist Kayleigh Fichten draw me in with their rhythmic repetitions and their candied colors.  According to her artist statement, she’s telling us, in her own strokes, of her own examining “of physical utopias and imagined place”.  We can each visit the same place, in the same moment, but we will all reinterpret that place and point in time in our own language.

  • Exchanges. Heather Day.

    Exchanges. Heather Day.

In just 48 hours, Mr. F and I will exchange one temporal locale for another.  We’ll drive a few hours down the Coast to spend the next three months in Marin County, just north of San Francisco.  Each one of these moves involves a lot of conversations and communications, between ourselves and with strangers, both those who remain so and those who become friends.  In her abstract paintings, San Francisco artist Heather Day captures the interactions happening between mediums on her canvas.

Each day, we interact with the people around us in a myriad of ways– with a look, a smile, a kind word or even an um, not so kind gesture, we are communicating with each other even when say nothing.  Our exchanges can be like a dance, initiating, giving, taking, some gestures larger than others– just as Day’s marks upon her canvases.

  • Distance. Katte Geneta.

    Distance. Katte Geneta.

I have a bit of a tendency to get caught up in details.  I’m detail oriented, which can be a big plus in some ways, but it does tend to make me a bit of a can’t-see-the-forest-for-the-trees- type sometimes.  So it’s good for me to get some distance, both literally and figuratively.  These small paintings by New York artist Katte Geneta reveal impressions of places distant from sight, distant from memory.

I first spotted Katte’s work in my Instagram feed, I think a fellow artist recommend her.  And these small, quiet paintings seemed a spot of calm among the cacophony of sunsets, cats, and selfies in a typical day’s feed.  As we look back upon a place, our memory often recalls the strongest impression– a line here, light there, this or that color.  But that impression is what stays with us and Katte’s interpretations of that sense of place are incredibly strong.  I can feel the cool air, the fog, the warmth of the setting sun.

  • Veils. Rowena Martinich.

    Veils. Rowena Martinich.

Although most of us aren’t required to wear them, many of us hide behind them.  I’m talking about veils.  They are often present even when we aren’t aware of them.  We use our veils to hide our authentic selves– maybe it is a certain personality or brand we project through social media, or a laugh that is just a bit too loud, or gossiping about others to avoid talking about ourselves.

    Rowena Martinich | artsy forager #art #artists #paintings #abstractart Rowena Martinich | artsy forager #art #artists #paintings #abstractart Rowena Martinich | artsy forager #art #artists #paintings #abstractart Rowena Martinich | artsy forager #art #artists #paintings #abstractart Rowena Martinich | artsy forager #art #artists #paintings #abstractart

Our veil may be attractive, heck, it may even be the reason for our popularity, but what happens when the veil gets a tear?  Who we truly are can’t be hidden forever, even as we try to recreate a different version of ourselves.  Glimpses peek out again and again, until soon, the curtain we hide behind is obscuring, not what others of us but how we see the world.

  • Softness. Mel Rea.

    Softness. Mel Rea.

We live in a world in which everyone seems to be competing for attention.  So many are shouting look at me, look at me!  And it is often the shouters that get the attention, because well, our attention is more easily gained by a blow horn than by the soft whistle of a bird.  These paintings by Mel Rea seem to revel in hushed strength.

    Mel Rea | artsy forager #art #artists #paintings #fineart #abstractart Mel Rea | artsy forager #art #artists #paintings #fineart #abstractart Mel Rea | artsy forager #art #artists #paintings #fineart #abstractart Mel Rea | artsy forager #art #artists #paintings #fineart #abstractart Mel Rea | artsy forager #art #artists #paintings #fineart #abstractart

Softly atmospheric with bright punches of color, Rea’s paintings remind me of those foggy early morning hours when the world is only just awakening.. The softness of the lifting darkness punctuated by the light of early risers, the occasional screech of brakes or blast of a horn jolting us from the stillness and into the rush of day.

  • Conversations. Robin Feld.

    Conversations. Robin Feld.

If you’ve ever worked in or hung a gallery, you might be familiar with the way paintings “talk” to each other.  When hung in the same or adjacent space, works of art interact with one another, echoing or contradicting each other’s shapes, colors, and textures.  In her artist statement, Brooklyn artist Robin Feld describes her desire for “the marks on the canvas to talk to each other..

Layers in paint parallel a conversation between people– there are quiet whispers followed by bursts of laughter, tension and release, hidden secrets and deep emotion.  As some relationships are more tumultuous and passionate, others are more refuges of peace and calm, so too, can paintings be.

    Impermanence. Fanny Nushka Moreaux.

These days, I find myself feeling grateful quite often.  The fleeting nature of life has never been more apparent, which seems to make it easier to find moments of bliss.  Perhaps because the darkness is lurking, the light shines more brightly.  The work of French artist Fanny Nushka Moreaux, with faded hues and gossamer figures, reminds me how very tenuous is our own existence.

Perhaps it is due to our transient lifestyle these days, our desire to seize every opportunity.  Since we never know when we leave a temporary home whether we will return to the area, we tend to make sure we’ve seen as much as we can.  There isn’t much laying around on the weekends– there is too much to do, too much to see!  In many ways, we are so fortunate.  Living in one place, it is easy to stop paying attention to the world around you, to take it for granted.  And the people, too.  Live like you never know when you’ll see this world again.
