    December Featured Artist. Anna Kincaide.

If you’ve been following the blog for awhile, you may recognize the work of our December Featured Artist.  Not only have I featured the work of Anna Kincaide on the blog several times, but she’s also one of the artists I selected for my Artsy Forager print collection for Mantle Art.

I have always had a fascination with the glamorous era of Cary Grant and his contemporaries, where Anna draws much of the inspiration for her fashion forward paintings. The way she isolates her figures against color-blocked or patterned backgrounds kind of make them feel like they have been lifted from the silver screen or fashion magazine and found themselves in the midst of a painting.  Which, if you think about it, is not such a bad place to be!

To see more of Anna Kincaide‘s work, please visit her website.  Her prints in my Mantle Art collection are perfect for gift giving, too– you can even choose a custom frame right on their site!  Easy peasy.  Follow along on Artsy Forager social media to see more of Anna’s work all December long!

  • November Featured Artist. Marsha Boston.

    November Featured Artist. Marsha Boston.

November might just be my favorite month.. shhh, don’t tell October!  So it’s only fitting to give you one of my favorite artists as the Featured Artist for the month of November!  California artist Marsha Boston is a painter after my own heart, exploring the wonders of plant life and how we might live in harmony with our botanical neighbors.

A while back, Mr. F and I listened to a fascinating BBC story on the concept of “rewilding“.  Listening to these experts talk about the positive changes that occur when once developed land is allowed to return to its wild state definitely led to some interesting conversation and thoughts about how we impact our environment now and how we might in the future.  Mr. F observed what an incredible amount of hubris it takes on the part of man to think he can do better than nature. Marsha’s work is often focused on how we define our relationship to nature.  Are we here to serve or be served?

To see more of Marsha Boston‘s work, please visit her website.  Her beautiful paintings will grace the Artsy Forager Facebook cover and I’ll be sharing more of Marsha’s work on other Artsy Forager social media all month long.  Make sure you’re following along!

September Featured Artist. Brenda Hope Zappitell

Kickin’ off a new month with a holiday ( for most of us ) and a new Featured Artist, you say?  Well, I’ll take that!  I’m excited to feature the abstract work of South Florida artist Brenda Hope Zappitell all September long!

    Brenda Hope Zappitell | artsy forager #art #artists #paintings #abstractart #contemporaryart Brenda Hope Zappitell | artsy forager #art #artists #paintings #abstractart #contemporaryart Brenda Hope Zappitell | artsy forager #art #artists #paintings #abstractart #contemporaryart Brenda Hope Zappitell | artsy forager #art #artists #paintings #abstractart #contemporaryart Brenda Hope Zappitell | artsy forager #art #artists #paintings #abstractart #contemporaryart

These abstract intuitive paintings have such a delicious rhythm to them, they almost seem to pulsate!  Brenda paints on a large scale, most paintings clocking in at more than four feet square, giving her work an enveloping nature.  There are also subtle layers of paint and beautiful little pockets of color and line that become so much more powerful at a larger size.

To see more of Brenda Hope Zappitell‘s work, please visit her website and watch the blog all month long!  Click over to the Artsy Forager Facebook Page to see what gorgeous Zappitell is gracing our cover, along with an album of some of my personal favorites.

In this latest series of work, being featured in her solo show, This Life at GF Contemporary, Mills invites us to sit and contemplate the moment in the midst of the pulse and entanglements of this fast paced existence.  The artist continues to perfect her reductive style, distilling each captured moment to its fleeting presence.

Wear the Artsy: Carlos Lopez + Emily Miranda

This past Sunday, following more weekend festivities than is normal for us, Mr. F and I took to the beach for the afternoon.  There is always something about the salt air, the crash of the waves, and the sand between your toes that is healing for the psyche!  Doesn’t the ocean have its own special, briny scent?  And it always seems to give sparkle to everything it produces.  The paintings of this month’s Featured Artist Carlos Lopez gives expression to the nourishing power of the sea and jewelry artist Emily Miranda‘s Oyster Cuff is the perfect sparkly companion!

Carlos is masterful at expressing the oyster’s gentle, undulating curves in paint, mimicking the rollicking waves, just as Emily Miranda sculpts those same contours from in her cuff bracelet.  One work of art to see, one to wear.

To see more of Carlos Lopez‘s work, please visit his website.  You can see more gorgeous jewelry by Emily Miranda on her website.  Both a feast for the eyes!

  • July Featured Artist Carlos Lopez

    July Featured Artist Carlos Lopez

Humboldt County, our temporary home of the moment, is apparently known for its oysters ( among other things, ahem.. ).  Their fame and abundance is pretty much completely lost on me.  I’ve just never been much of a fan, will only eat them fried ( hello, southern girl ) or baked with champagne and brie ‘cuz I’m fancy like that and Mr. F makes them this way and they are not only palatable but to die for delicious!  If there were any other way to make me love them, it would be through the work of this month’s Featured Artist Carlos Lopez, who finds amazing beauty in their jagged shells.

I’ve featured the work of this young New Orleans painter before and he is constantly “painting, painting” as his daily Facebook status attests, cranking out new, inventive ways of seeing his signature subject.  Most recently, he’s taken to isolating his oyster shells on bright, bold backgrounds, giving them a contemporary pop quality that is especially striking.  You’ll be seeing more from Carlos all through this month, so stay tuned!

To see more work from Carlos Lopez, please visit his website and the website of his representing gallery, Gallery Orange in New Orleans.  Be sure to head over to the Artsy Forager Facebook page where Carlos is our cover artist and I’ve put together an album of my Lopez faves!

  • Live the Artsy: Deb Haugen

    Live the Artsy: Deb Haugen

Home has been a subject in the forefront of our minds lately.  Over the next several years, Mr. F and I are saving like mad so that we can settle down and build a little house that fits our needs and our aesthetic perfectly.  What might that aesthetic be, you ask?  Well, it has a lot in common with the work of this month’s Featured Artist, Deb Haugen— fresh and organic, yet modern.

In her work, Deb, a California-girl, balances that lovely line between the modern and organic, often employing watery, free flowing colored forms dotted with graphic ink drawing.  Translating her work into a living space means lots of white walls and furnishings dotted with pops of muted color and warmed with natural textures and graphic punches of black.

A space like this is just dying for a post-beach fire, wine, and conversation!  If you’d like to see more of Deb Haugen‘s work, check out her website AND visit The Trove, Artsy Forager’s new Great.ly boutique gallery where you can find lots of Deb’s work for sale including these lovelies EXCLUSIVE to The Trove!

  • June Featured Artist: Deb Haugen

    June Featured Artist: Deb Haugen

There are certain artists whose work just instantly resonates with me.  Perhaps it’s their style or subject matter, but in the case of this month’s Featured Artist, Deb Haugen, it’s both.  When I first saw her work waaay back in 2011, I immediately responded to the free flowing naturalness to her work.

    Deb Haugen | artsy forager #art #artists #abstractart #contemporaryart Deb Haugen | artsy forager #art #artists #abstractart #contemporaryart Deb Haugen | artsy forager #art #artists #abstractart #contemporaryart Deb Haugen | artsy forager #art #artists #abstractart #contemporaryart Deb Haugen | artsy forager #art #artists #abstractart #contemporaryart

Since then, Deb’s work has evolved beautifully, in some cases incorporating graphic drawing as in her ink pieces featured above.  These intuitive drawings have a delicious tension between the concrete illustrative quality of intricate patterns and the bright, watery world surrounding them.

I’m not the only one who is drawn to these organic beauties– Neiman Marcus and Crate & Barrel have both carried Deb’s prints ( currently available through Neiman Marcus, new large print to come for C&B! ).  But you can also purchase Deb’s work directly through her own website shop!  Gorgeous work at super affordable prices, you can’t go wrong!

To see more of Deb Haugen‘s work, please visit her website and be sure to follow her on Facebook, Twitter & Instagram to keep up with what she’s up to!  You’ll be seeing more of Deb’s work around the blog & Artsy Forager social media all June long!

Post WWII prosperity ushered in a turning point in the world of advertising and manufactured goods– packaging and design were no longer concerned mainly with function, even the most mundane of objects were created with an appealing aesthetic.  This month’s Featured Artist Holly Farrell celebrates the beauty in these old objects, breathing new and fresh life into designs of the past.

How would it be to live out Farrell’s aesthetic?

With a bright and light modern palette, accentuated with touches of muted color.  Pops of graphic, retro pattern along with sleek metals recall the dawn of the industrial age, with those colors and a few carefully placed wood tones keeping the view warm and fun.  I can’t decide which of these looks I like best!  Which is your fave?
