    Proper Arrangements: Anna Church

In these days of drive-thru’s and fast everything, there exists a ready convenience to life that is intoxicating.  Most would say we don’t miss the days of corsets and class rule ( though there’s definitely an argument that both still exist, just in different forms ).  But for all the rigidity and rules, there was perhaps a meticulousness to life then that we’ve lost touch with.  Toronto artist Anna Church in her carefully assembled creations honors these symbols of our past.

Church comes flea markets and other sources to find just the right pieces to craft her symbolic assemblages.  Whether her Insignia or At Your Service series, arrangements of objects and ephemera are pieced together with exacting precision and aesthetic romanticism.  The resulting imagery, available as limited edition prints, are at once recognizable and enigmatic.  For all of these objects were once treasures of other people, a part of the history of many, emblematic of one.

    Collected Scenes: Susanna Sundman

Many artists are collectors of some sort.  Whether collectors of the fleeting and untouchable such as memories or moments, or of more tangible things in which they see a beauty that others may not.  Artist Susanna Sundman creates the most charming and lovely compositions out of her collections.

Sussuni3 Sussuni4 Sussuni7 Sussuni6 Sussuni5While she does lovely work in watercolors, it was these little assemblages that I seemed to keep coming back to and finding so enchanting.  There is a careful deliberation about them, yet them seem entirely playful and fun.  Each one is a wonderful little mix of texture, color, and story.

Friday Finds: A Little Birdie Told Me So

One of our favorite things about living at the lake this summer has been our evening walks.  Once the heat begins to wane, all the birds begin to sing.  We often end our walk by making our way down to the dock where we sit and watch birds both great and small as they hunt for dinner.  I’ve even told George I’m going to take up serious bird watching.  I’m going to be a funny old lady with her huge hat and binoculars watching all the birds that fly by.. So today’s round up is brought to you by some pretty little birds of the artsy kind that I’m admiring this week!
