    Enhanced Beauty: Spiros Halaris

    We all have our product loyalties.  Mr. F is fiercely loyal to King Arthur Flour, for instance.  Sometimes, as in Mr. F’s case, it’s about how the product performs, in others, it’s because we are enchanted by not just the product, but the packaging.  New York based illustrator Spiros Halaris has created a charming series of illustrations celebrating the Aesop brand of beauty care products.

    Halaris’ illustrations show crumbled, well used and presumably well loved tubes of Aesop balms and lotions against a drawn illustration of berry branches.  In looking at these pieces, I’m reminded of the connection between nature, beauty products, and paint.  All can be used to beautify in different ways and there is a natural bridge between found beauty in nature, enhanced beauty with cosmetics, and created beauty in paint.

    The Freshmaker: Heather Landis

    In some ways, it seems like collage work is on the downside turn of its recent resurgence.  There is so much of it out there, it can be a challenge to find work that feels fresh and original.  Los Angeles artist Heather Landis uses a tight palette of color, cheeky use of typography and just the right mix of vintage and modern in her collages.

    Her palettes are filled with those decidedly vintage-feeling hues of peaches and pinks, accentuated by the steely greys that were so indicative of the atomic age.  Much of her work seems to deal with the coming loss of “innocence” brought on by turbulence of the Vietnam War, the sexual revolution, and well, just the end of what many perceive as the The Golden Age of pop culture.

    The women in Landis’ collages seem to be blissfully unaware of what is soon to come.  Beatific domesticity will give way to struggling to push through the glass ceiling and climbing the corporate ladder.

    But Landis isn’t hitting us over the head with messages.  Just subtly drawing us in to her happy-go-lucky world, then subversively reminding us that what used to be wasn’t always better.

    I just discovered the most horrible accident!  It seems that WordPress in all her annoying glory never posted this Guest Forager feature back in April!  And I just discovered the “missed schedule” post.  For shame!  So today you get a bonus post, one that should have posted oh so many moons ago.  Mucho apologies to Gab who wrote such a wonderful post!

    It’s no secret how much I love quirky art, and today I’ll be sharing some of that love with ya. Say hello to Gordon Wiebe and his cheerful collage illustrations!

    Mr. Wiebe is a Toronto-based artist (yay Canada) whose work has been honored by the Society of Illustrators in NY and LA, among many others. He’s well known for his bold, conceptual images that are influenced by childhood memories and even some political affairs.

    I love how there’s always some sort of smiley face painted in his illustrations. It’s always nice to find a happy surprise when you’re looking at art, yes?

    Last week I shared with you guys how lost I’d been feeling lately.  It seems, that when you reach a certain age ( gulp! ), staying true to yourself, who you are and who you long to be becomes a matter of the utmost importance.  You’re no longer that young person trying on personas for size.  This series of illustrations by Paris designer Leslie David, done for Please! magazine called out to the feeling that had been haunting me, that denial of my own self.

    For this series, David reinterpreted a series of photos from issue 11 of the magazine, painting over the faces of models in colorful, textured splotches.

    No matter how you may glam it up, denial of who we are in our core destroys us.  It may begin innocently enough, but over time that mask that we’re wearing eventually overcomes us and overtakes us so that we can no longer see who we used to be.

    Art to Inspiration: Linda Monfort

    I’ve been out to lunch Art to Inspiration-wise lately.  I love this collaborative exercise, but alas, there just wasn’t time for it last month with our moving 1300 miles south and all.  But this month’s inspiration piece is so lovely, I couldn’t resist!  The inspiration artwork for November, The Other Side by painter Linda Monfort, is full of the vibrant color I’m longing for after my first few weeks of living in the desert.
