Design Foraging: Cloud Illusions, I Recall

Monday morning, as Mr. Forager & I were leaving home, we both got excited at how grey and blustery a morning it was here in the desert.  A “Northwest kind of day!” we both exclaimed.  Perhaps you might think us a bit odd, but we really miss the grey and the rain.  Cool days spent reading in a coffee shop, wandering through used bookstores and galleries.  Those days just don’t seem to happen here in the desert.  So as I’m finding myself longing for clouds, I rounded up a few artsy finds of the cumulus variety!

  • Friday Design Finds: Not Your Grandma’s Patchwork

Nothing against your grandma or her patchwork.  Heck, I have a cherished and loved until it is falling apart patchwork quilt that belonged to my own grandmother.  But patchwork has gotten an update.  Bright colors, bold patterns and modern mixes are taking this old tradition from granny-style to boho chic.  Not sure I could ever talk Mr. Forager into a sofa, but maybe a bowl or two?  A little updated antiquarian boldness goes a long way.

  • Live the Artsy: Her Name Was Anna

As fellow Artsies, I know that you are familiar with that sensation that comes over you when gazing upon a favorite work of art.. you want to jump right in and live inside the canvas.  Well, dear Artsies, I say you can!  In this new series, Live the Artsy, I’ll show you how a work of art can come alive as a living space.

Living in Her Name was Anna by this month’s featured artist Diana Lemieux means dark, cozy walls that envelop you like a forest, classically traditional shapes, and a few punches of color for attitude.  I’m picturing a little Notting Hill apartment that smells of heather and tea.

Any work of art you’ve fantasized about living in?  Let me know in the comments and I might just show you how to Live the Artsy!

  • Insert the [ Artsy ]: Fuzzy Sculptures and Sunsets

Holy wow, it’s been a long time since I did an Insert the Artsy post!  I’d forgotten how much fun they can be, dreaming and scheming what piece of artwork I would place in a room.  When I saw this room designed by Erin Martin, on Pinterest, I loved the warm sparseness of it, those wood beams, high ceilings and that magnificent hanging sculpture!  But then I thought, oh, maybe that space above the bed could use just a little cool, saturated color– not too much and nothing too textural to take away from what’s happening above.. enter the work of New York photographer Eric Cahan.

I love the way the deep turquoise of Cahan’s work plays off the subtle browns and oranges in the wood, while the purple adds just the right touch of coolness.  The quiet sleekness of the photograph is a perfect foil for the shaggy texture of the hanging sculpture and rusticity of the wood beams.

What do you think, Artsies?  What piece of artwork would you like to wake up to in this room?

Friday Design Finds: Color Inside the Lines

Last weekend, Mr. Forager & I took a trip up to Big Bear, CA, our first chance to see snow since our winter in Northern Idaho last year.  As we hiked through the snow shrouded woods, I was reminded again just how lovely everything looks under a blanket of white and how beautifully even the dullest of colors pop against the snowy canvas.  Today’s design finds remind me of that frosted treatment, as each has its own pop of color amid the pale!

  • Artsy Holiday: For the Artsy Naturalist

Artsy Holiday: For the Artsy Naturalist

The holidays are upon us!  And I love them.  I can’t help it.  Much to Mr. Forager’s chagrin, I totally get into the music, the decorating, the cooking, and of course, the gift giving!  It seems every blogger does a gift guide, so why shouldn’t I get in on the action?  So each Friday until Christmas, the regular Friday Design Finds posts will be replaced with a selection of gifts for the artsy folks on your list!

We begin with gifts for the Artsy Naturalist– there’s no reason why buying for nature lovers should be limited to hiking boots and camping supplies!

  • Friday Design Finds: The Light Fantastics

Friday Design Finds: The Light Fantastics

I’m a huge fan of combining artistry with functionality.  Why should we settle for something boring when we could fill our worlds with the extraordinary?  Time to rip down that contractor’s special chandelier you’ve been hating on since you moved in.  Maybe one of these will inspire you to think outside the Home Depot box. Check out these fantastically artsy options!

  • Friday Design Finds: If These Walls Could Draw

Friday Design Finds: If These Walls Could Draw

Happy Friday, Artsies!!  You may have noticed that the Friday round-ups have been a bit more design oriented of late.  It wasn’t intentional on my part at first, but once I noticed it, I decided to just dive in completely!  Artsiness abounds in all kinds of places– fashion and interior design, architecture, consumer goods, you name it.  So beginning today, each Friday I’ll bring you a group of artsy design goodies that I find inspiring.  Hope you enjoy!

Secret AF tidbit: The one and only time I was ever spanked as a child was for drawing on my bedroom walls with a permanent marker.  Now, there are wall coverings made especially for coloring or you can just draw/paint directly onto your wall ( if you’re an adult & own your walls ).  Instantly artsy vertical space.
