As we thought it would, the rainy days came back full force here in Seattle, just in time for the long holiday weekend! That didn’t stop Mr. Forager & I from getting out and exploring some new ‘hoods. We checked out up & coming neighborhood Columbia City ( rumored to be the most diverse neighborhood in the US! ), discovered lots of Asian goodies & yummies at Uwajimaya Market in the International District, roamed around the uber trendy and totally fun nightlife on Capitol Hill and picnicked in the rain at Chateau Ste. Michelle, along with thousands of other Seattleites. One of my favorite things about Seattle? No one lets a few raindrops spoil their fun. Gotta love the determination!

This was the first weekend that felt like we actually lived here. We weren’t running around and unpacking all weekend ( although there was a little of that ). We had the luxury of sleeping in, exploring and discovering. A bike trail just around the corner from our apartment happily leads almost directly to Pike Place Market where we explored the seafood and produce stands and Mr. Forager bought me a bouquet of poppies. Which we quickly realized don’t last very long… We explored our neighborhood and searched out what are already becoming a few favorite spots.

So I’ve hardly made a secret out of how very excited we were for Mr. F to take a work assignment here in Seattle. We seriously have to pinch ourselves even after being here for almost two weeks!
Finally getting to be in this place that we love so much, where we fell in love, got us thinking. Why not stop here? We adore this city, the food, the mountains, the water, the music, the ART(!) so very much.
It’s something we’ve been talking about off and on for a few months. Circumstances seemed to be leading us in this direction. We’ve loved traveling and have enjoyed ( almost ) every minute of the last two years of adventure together. But we couldn’t ignore the timing and the way in which it seemed a hand was guiding us here.
So we signed a twelve month lease on our apartment and have begun furnishing it. After being married for over two years, we’re finally truly making a home together. And it feels good.
As we’ll be staying put here in Seattle for a good long while, perhaps forever we hope, it’s time for me to re-enter the work force. I’ve done a few freelance projects since we started traveling but we’ve always agreed that once we stopped traveling I would go back to work full time. And you know something? I’m kind of excited about it.
So any Seattle area artsies– if you know of any job openings in the arts ( galleries, art consultants, museums, etc ), let me know! I have several prospects in the works already. We’re feeling really positive about the choice we’ve made. This is our city. This is our home.
Greetings from Seattle! I’m finally here, way tired, a bit frazzled and overwhelmed with settling in, but officially back among the blogging. The last few weeks in the Forager universe have been a crazy mix of traveling, seeing new places, saying goodbye to old friends and hello to the new. We clocked in well over 1300 miles, 5 nights in hotels, 6 nights with friends & family, drove through 3 states and tried over 10 Seattle apartments on for size in two days. We’re still making our home here ( our bed, a sofa & a dresser is all we have so far in the way of furniture ), but we’re already finding some favorite neighborhood spots and our love affair with Seattle is still going strong.
While I scour Craigslist for furniture deals today, I thought you might enjoy seeing a few snapshots from our journey!

Sorry for the lack of Seattle photos this go ’round. We ( I )’ve been so distracted with finding a home and settling in that the camera hasn’t come out much. Not to worry. They are coming. Just try and stop me! Back tomorrow with brand new artsy discoveries!

Happy Earth Day, dear Artsies! I wish I could tell you that in anticipation of the celebration of our beautiful planet that Mr. Forager & I got out and did some hiking during our last weekend in Joshua Tree. But alas, there were errands to run, boxes to pack, and it was close to 90 degrees here in the desert, which when hiking with little shade feels like triple digits!
As we prepare to bid farewell to JT, I thought you might enjoy a few peeks inside our past forays into JT National Park to celebrate Earth Day!
It’s been lovely, Joshua Tree. I wish we could say we will miss you like crazy, but you deserve folks who love you like we never could. It’s not you, it’s us. Farewell.

I’ve been thinking a lot these days on the concept of “normal”. As we prepare to leave Joshua Tree after Mr. F’s six month work contract here, it feels normal to us– this constant research of new places, rental prices, average weather temps, this packing up of our belongings and anticipation of discovering a new place. While this is life for us right now, it’s taken a while for it to feel normal for me. I don’t freak out as much as I used to. In fact, it’s possible we could leave the desert without actually knowing where our next landing spot will be. I know for many folks, the concept of this way of life would be too scary, too unpredictable to handle. But for us, at least at this point in our lives, that’s what makes it fun! And in each new place, we settle into our own very normal routine, just as if we’ve lived there for years. We find our favorite coffee purveyor, weekend breakfast spot and an evening walking route.
We were back in San Diego this weekend to celebrate the birthdays of the young sons of our friends there. A & N turned three years old. Three years ago, their parents had just adopted big brother C, and were getting used to the idea of being parents to him when they found out they were pregnant with two more boys. Their idea of normal life had been turned on its head.
After lots of scares and complications, the boys were born, but very prematurely. They struggled to survive in the NICU for weeks. M & V’s new normal was caring for C while championing A & N to grown strong enough to come home. Their normal changed again after finally being able to bring the boys home but then continuing to endure hospital stays, testing and therapy.
Eventually it was determined that A wasn’t progressing in the same way as N. Normal then morphed again when their son was diagnosed with cerebral palsy. So normal became not only the craziness of juggling life with three small children, but fighting the odds to make sure A had every chance possible. He is now a thriving three year old boy with a smile as wide as the ocean. He can communicate in three languages– English, Spanish ( V is from a wonderful, large loving Mexican family ) and sign language. He loves music and went horseback riding with no fear the morning of his birthday party.
And now their normal has been shaken again, as C undergoes genetic testing for a possible muscular disorder. It seems that normal will be an ever changing concept for this sweet family. But what remains constant through each twist and turn is their love and strength and grace in weathering each storm and embracing each change. After all, their normality is what becomes every day practice for them, just as our normality is our own familiar experience. Circumstances may feel foreign at first, but the more we immerse ourselves in our new experiences, the more normal they become. This is what I’m continually reminding myself when I think about the uncertainty that lies ahead. With each change, we become better versions of our normal selves.

No, not like that. We had one of those crazy running-around-trying-to-get-things-done-before-we-move kind of weekends. Mr. F & I love to hike and I am long overdue a new pair of hiking boots. Which isn’t as easy a purchase as you might think! Good boots don’t come cheap and the last thing you want on mile eight of a fifteen mile hike is to start getting blisters, believe me. So we drove all the way to Rancho Cucamonga to the nearest REI. Like Cinderella, I tried on a bunch of glass slippers boots but alas, no magic. Stopped in at a few art supply stores while there as I had it in my head to finish a large painting before we leave Joshua Tree. In less than three weeks. And next weekend we’ll be in San Diego. Mr. F delicately suggested I might be biting off more than I can chew.. he was right and besides they didn’t have the size I wanted on sale. So I decided to back burner it for a while.
We shopped for toddler birthday gifts and fun stuff like dental floss and toilet paper and took a break for a wine tasting ( thanks over-indulger for spilling red wine all over me! ) and a little sushi, which I’ve been dying for lately. Sunday was spent with me doing a little research for this little blog ( look for another redesign soon! ) and Mr. F bottling his latest batch o’ beer. Oh and we started packing for our move! We have no idea where we are going yet, but we’ve begun preparing for the journey. I think there’s something poetic and utterly hopeful about that. 😉 I didn’t take the time to snap many pics this weekend, but we spied some lovely spring desert blooms on our Sunday evening walk. Hope you enjoy!

Anyone else in the midst of a move? Hoping to begin planning one? Any desert plant enthusiasts out there know what my unidentified blooms are? What spring flowers are you spotting these days?
It seems like every time we go to visit our friends in San Diego, one of us inevitably catches whatever those three cute little germ monsters AKA The James Boys are harboring. After our return, Mr. F kept complaining of not feeling so hot and I was feeling great.. until last Thursday. Apparently, it was my turn at the virus wheel. We’d already planned a day of wine tasting with friends we met on our first travel assignment in the Northwest, so I popped a few Dayquil and soldiered on. There was wine to be drunk and friends to catch up with! But then Sunday came.

I felt great for most of the day on Saturday, until about ten minutes before we left the last winery. Then I found myself barely awake for the ride home, most of the day Sunday and a good part of the morning today. Being sick is no fun!! *cough* Going to make myself some soup and head back to bed. Thank God for Hulu. Take care, Artsies! I’ll see you on the other side of this cold.
In case there was ever any doubt ( which there never really was ), Mr. Forager & I have determined we are not desert people. Sure we can appreciate the wide open space, days and days of sunshine, and night skies full of stars. But we’ve been here in Joshua Tree for five months and we miss blue water and tall green trees! We’re getting antsy to bid farewell to desert life. So we were more than happy to escape to San Diego this weekend to visit with friends and soak up some sea air..

This was our 3rd weekend in a row at home in Joshua Tree.. let’s just say we’re getting a bit stir crazy! Especially since we heard of a possible job assignment for Mr. F in an area we would really like to see and experience ( could possibly have more news on that front even today! *fingers crossed* ). So much of our weekend, in between Mr. F doing coursework, baking bread, making pasta, drinking pina coladas ( we like getting caught in the rain ), piles of laundry, Mr. F’s fourth turn at home brewing, and tending a delish Beef & Ale Stew for St. Patty’s, we talked and dreamed about what could be our next landing spot. All the while melting in the Southern California spring sun.
