Today seems to be the day for posting childhood memory-inspired works of art! I am a firm believer in public art that serves to delight and inspire any viewer. Public art should appeal to the public, you shouldn’t need to be versed in art history or elements of design to appreciate and admire it. The Bubblegum installation of artists Merijn Hos and Renée Reijnders perfectly demonstrates the ability of public art to enchant and amuse.

August 30, 2012 at 8:49 AMThe thing I most love about public art is that it can inspire interaction! Recently my kids and I were in Port Townsend and they found lots of different ways to interact with a couple of public, large scale sculptures. There was one iron sculpture that sort of looked like a bolt or a scalloped doughnut. My twelve year old son posed as if he was superman flying through the hole, both my kids put their faces in the hole like a picture frame. It is these kinds of interactions that make people aware of the art and add to a greater appreciation as they bring their own sensibilities and responses to it!
